Comparative literature in India started as an amalgam of multilingual literatures having multiple cosmopolitanisms (Prakrit, Sanskrit, Persian), vernacular cosmopolitan writing cultures with long histories of literatures, intermedial representations with overlapping of textuality, orality and performativity, fusing of elite, popular and folk public spheres and an exponentially increasing translation potential between languages, both written and oral. It also incorporated the diverse fields of study prominent in comparative literature studies elsewhere such as cosmopolitan studies, comparative cultural studies, world literature, border studies, translation studies, digital humanities etc. This study group plans to initiate discussions on concepts, methodology and issues related to the practice of comparative literature in India as well as the scope of interdisciplinary work in related disciplines such as cultural studies, translation studies, history, philosophy and digital humanities. It also seeks to engage in dialogues and debates on issues related to the notion and practice of comparative literature in the world.
