The primary intention of the group is to expand the horizon of communication among folklorists of the Indian subcontinent with an aim to develop critical tools and methodologies unique to the study of vernacular folk cultures. The need for comparative framework, intermediality and dense archive, is deemed indispensable in the context of the subcontinent which is characterised by heterogeneity and multiplicity of cultures on the one hand, and a shared space marked by continuous overlaps and dialogues on the other. The group aspires to discern contemporary patterns of theoretical structures employed by international, Indian and regional scholars of folklore to facilitate access to diverse material and critical apparatuses for a nuanced study of folk traditions of the subcontinent.
